Wowlebrity David Keeps, who was the ebullient gadabout host of World of Wonder's Ovation TV series Art & the City, was sponsored recently by WOW to get on the road again and join the 2,100 cyclists in the AIDS Lifecycle 8 marathon. Sadly, the "bike-curious" writer didn't fare so well. Or feel so well. Says he:
The AIDS Lifecycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles was absolutely NOTHING like I expected. Most people bust their butts on this 545-mile ride – me, I just cracked a rib and jacked my shoulder. And, somehow, got pneumonia. At mile 50, on the FIRST day of the ride, I ate asphalt after hitting a clump of dirt on US 1 near Pescadero Beach, leaving all kinds of DNA samples on the road. As I stared at my bloody fingers, a rider stopped and sprayed antiseptic on them. (Ouch and, um, thanks) My teammate Jeff helped me get to my feet and to the side of the road. I sat on a curb and, feeling a strong need to catch my breath, decided it would be wise to have a little lie-down. Those around me said I passed out. Tomato, to-mah-toe. Jeff captured this Kodak moment with the EMTs, then finished the ride. I got the prescription for Vicodin. Who's sorrrrrrrry now? (Photo: Jeff Spurrier)
